Stories in the Rain
“Stories in the Rain” is an interactive audio-visual experience that depicts stories from the community of Boston as raindrops. As you approach the display, the chosen voice becomes louder, allowing the user to use their movements to focus on the stories they wish to hear. A void appears around the selected drop, its size correlated with the volume. An ultrasonic sensor (HC-SR04) tracks the user’s proximity to the display, and the visuals are generated in P5.js. The installation allowed me to observe how users engage with an experience where they have no agency over which stories they hear, only how they hear it. This project also allowed me to engage in lightweight audio design and mixing of the highlights, rain sounds, and my own voice over instructions.
This interactive installation served as my final project for Introduction to Interactive, Participatory, and Generative Art Making taught by Gearóid Dolan at MIT.
